Hormone Replacement FAQ We Listen. We Care. We Get Results.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re struggling to deal with your low testosterone or low estrogen symptoms, you may be curious as to how bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can help you. Specifically, you may have questions regarding pellet therapy. What is it, and how is it different from pills and creams? Do you have to prepare yourself for the therapy? We answer these questions and more in our FAQs.

What is BHRT?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, is a form of hormone therapy that has existed in the U.S. for many decades and uses hormones structurally similar to those found within the human body produced naturally.

How much does Biote cost?

Biote is a non-insurance-covered service. We offer FREE consultations. We do a full panel of lab tests to determine if you are a Biote candidate. The initial lab fee is $255.00. All other costs and fees are discussed in your consultation.

What do I need to do to prepare for the pellet insertion?

You don’t need to fast, but we do recommend avoiding NSAIDs for a week before your appointment. These include painkillers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen. You must also take a comprehensive blood test so that the compounding pharmacist can safely concoct your pellet.

What can I expect to experience during the procedure?

The entire procedure lasts just a few minutes. The doctor will numb your skin in the area where the pellet will be inserted. Usually, this is in the upper buttocks. After a tiny incision has been made, the pellet can be placed under your skin. You won’t need stitches or any long-term recovery time; a small bandage will cover the site of insertion. You can then walk out of the office.

Will I need to make any lifestyle changes?

For the week following your pellet insertion, you will want to avoid working out your lower body. You can walk, but you shouldn’t engage in anything high-impact like running or jogging. Immersing yourself in water by swimming, bathing, or soaking in a hot tub is not recommended until your bandage is removed. Showering is acceptable.

How many times a year will I receive a new pellet?

It depends on your unique physiology. You could need only two pellets a year, or you might have to replace your pellet as many as six times.

Will the old pellet have to be removed?

No. Because the pellet is bioidentical, and only contains hormones that mimic those naturally found in your body, the pellet will dissolve and be safely absorbed.

Why does pellet therapy work?

Made of bioidentical hormones, pellets are custom-compounded by a specially trained pharmacist. They provide continuous and tailor-made hormone therapy to the patient, as opposed to topical creams and oral pills that give the entire dose at once.

What hormone imbalances can pellet therapy resolve?

Pellet therapy primarily helps those suffering from estrogen and testosterone deficiencies.

What do estrogen pellets contain?

Pellets that are made to relieve women’s symptoms generally associated with menopause contain a form of estrogen called estradiol. The pellet itself is in the shape of a small cylinder that can be inserted under the patient’s skin to offer consistent hormone therapy.

How are testosterone pellets made?

Testosterone pellets are comprised of powdered testosterone that is bonded with stearic acid, a plant-based fatty acid. Each pellet is made by a trained, compound pharmacist to suit the exact needs of the patient, so you can rest assured that you will experience relief from your symptoms. These can include irritability, sexual performance problems, and low energy.
